4 Ways to Stay Healthy During the Holidays

Find out how you can stay healthy this season despite all the good food and partying. Here are great tips that you should always keep in mind to stay in tip-top shape:

Go for a family walk
We know every Christmas special under the sun will be showing on the TV, but you don’t need to plonk yourself on the sofa all day! Encourage the whole family to get out for a walk at some point – ideally, after dinner to aid digestion. The more activity, the better, so take along any new outdoor gifts, like bikes, scooters, footballs or Frisbees, or play old-fashioned games. Source: RealBuzz

Keep the focus on fun, not food
Most holidays are associated with certain foods. Christmas at your house might not be the same without your aunt’s green been casserole, but that doesn’t mean food has to be the main focus. Instead, throw yourself into the other rituals a holiday brings, whether it’s caroling or tree trimming. Source: RD

Plan your meals
Go online and research just how many calories are in the foods you normally eat during the holiday season. Being aware of what you’re consuming can motivate you to choose healthier alternatives. You never want to enter a holiday feast on an empty stomach. This can cause overeating and overindulging. Stock up on healthy snacks that help ease cravings and satisfy your appetite. Don’t starve
Avoid the holiday splurge-and-starve cycle. Verstegen finds that when people eat a large meal or overindulge, “there’s a tendency to say ‘I overate at dinner last night, so I’ll just skip breakfast and lunch.'” Steer clear of that downward spiral, he says. Better to break the cycle right away by starting the next morning with a quick walk and light, nutritious breakfast, and fill up with a snack and a glass of water before you sit down to the next tempting meal.
