3 Ways to Stay Active During Winter

Keeping an active lifestyle during the winter is a challenge considering how cozy it is to just bundle up and relax while it’s snowing outside. Maintain good health by doing any of the following:

Play a winter sport
Winter weather offers a wide array of fun activities to do that can involve the whole family. Try a new winter sport like ice skating, skiing, snowboarding or even sledding. Taking up a new activity that has an expiration date can be motivating because in a couple months, your opportunity will have melted away. Incorporating a new activity in your life is beneficial for you and your family. Take a group ski lesson with some friends or spend an afternoon running through the snow and sledding with your family. Any way to stay active is a good way. Source: Active

Try restorative activities
Don’t overlook gentle or restorative activities like yoga, tai chi, and qigong that can build strength, increase flexibility, and help you relax. They can also refresh your energy and improve your stamina throughout the winter. “Your energy can become depleted from the stresses of too much to do during the holidays,” says Quilter. “This can lead to diminished immunity and colds and flu.” Source: EverydayHealth

Start a new routine at home
Sure, getting to the gym can be more of a hassle when it is cold outside, but never use snowy weather as an excuse to miss your daily exercise. Instead, work out at home, where’s it’s cozy and warm. Whether you pop in a new workout DVD, invest in a few pieces of fitness equipment or even just use your body weight for a killer workout, exercising at home can be a convenient (and fun!) solution to staying on track. And the best part about working out from your own home? You don’t have to worry about sharing a TV with fellow gym goers or possibly catching an illness at the gym. Home really is where the (healthy) heart is. Source: SparkPeople
